Reinventing payroll a payroll leaders challenge

202245 NZPPA Linkedin banner v4

Reinventing payroll is the payroll leaders challenge. Just like any other part of the business the payroll leader must focus on what the business needs from payroll, while looking at new ways to reduce costs, improve efficiency and ensure ongoing payroll compliance.

Reinventing does not mean change for change sake, it is about identifying when change is needed and then looking at all options (known and new) and how it will aid and benefit payroll and the business overall.

A simple definition of “Reinventing”

  1. to invent again or anew, especially without knowing that the invention already exists.
  2. to remake or make over, as in a different form:
  3. to bring back; revive:

In many cases payroll has never moved on in regard to its people, processes or practice and in the present environment where payroll is now in the spotlight from the issues with the Holidays Act it is essential that the payroll leader moves their payroll forward to be fully capable of providing what is needed by the business today!

This year’s payroll leaders’ summit will focus on providing a range of speakers that can aid the payroll leader in refocusing and reinventing payroll to meet the needs of their business going forward.

The summit will also give attendees the chance to networking and share experiences with other established ad up and coming payroll leaders.

NZPPA 4th Payroll Leaders Summit Conference Programme

This year’s summit workshop

Last year we introduced a conference workshop slot and this was very successful and we had the opportunity to run two this year so it will now be a regular feature of the leaders’ summit programme.

Workshop Topic 1: From Aspiring to Inspiring: Building on your Core Strengths

Workshop leader: Dr Michelle Shields, Consultant/Facilitator/Coach

Becoming an inspirational leader starts with doing the basics well and then moving from good to great in areas that are your strength. This masterclass highlights the five essential cornerstones of strong leadership as defined by those who are in a position to know – followers.

Based on the research of 200,000 cases of effective leadership, authors Zenger and Folkman explain the behaviours that define one of the most elusive of all leadership skills – inspiring others. While sometimes thought of as ‘charisma’, the research shared in this masterclass spells out the behaviours that transform good leaders into extraordinary leaders.

This masterclass takes you through the research-based foundations of what makes an effective leader and introduces the key behaviours that have been shown to account for the top 10% of the best leaders – those habits and attitudes that constitute inspirational leadership.

Whether you are developing as a leader or creating frameworks for leadership development of others, this masterclass will broaden your thinking about the focus of your efforts.

This masterclass addresses the leadership behaviours of Personal Leadership and People Development on our Leadership Competencies Framework.

Workshop Topic 2: Responding to the pressures of payroll and the inevitable

Workshop leaders: Viv Patterson & Steve Kennedy

  • Identifying and acknowledging stress
  • Developing stress management
  • Responding to change through team culture

Changes in the payroll process and quality requirements can create challenging and stressful circumstances for leaders and their teams as they regularly deal with high repetition and rely on department managers to provide accurate employee information. This workshop, led by Viv Patterson and Steve Kennedy, will help you to identify stress within the team, develop resilience through stress management and respond to change through team culture.

Summit Motivational Speaker – Sandy Hutchison

So how do you pay a robot's salary?

The future of work and what it means for HR and your career in it.

Disrupting payroll is the theme of this conference, and while Payroll specialist must continue to challenge best practice and build new approaches, they also must recognise they are doing so in a wider context of massive change and disruption. The world of work, as we know it is about to change dramatically, in the not too distant future, we will move from the binary employee/not employee model in our workforce, to an organisational eco system with a range of stakeholders that contribute to the success of an organisations, but not necessarily as an “employees” as we know them today.

The new world of work includes a gig economy, with freelancers, older workers reinventing themselves, flexible work practices, AI and robots joining us at work or taking our jobs creating massive job displacement and the need to retrain and redeploy large numbers of employees. What does this all mean for the Human Resource function and for Human Resources professionals, including payroll specialists? How do we plan for a rapidly changing world, where the whole concept of what work is, who does it and how, will be redefined and challenged like never before?

This presentation, will highlight the scope and scale of the change ahead and provide some frameworks to help you think about how you prepare both for your organisation and your own career.
