Study into former refugees’ experiences in NZ

Quota Refugees Ten Years On

Every year New Zealand opens its doors to 750 people seeking a new life, safe from the threats that forced them to flee their homelands.

IMSED Research has embarked on a major study of the long-term settlement experiences of people who have arrived through the Refugee Quota Category between 1993 and 1999 to better understand this process. This study is known as Quota Refugees Ten Years On.

Vasantha Krishnan, Manager of IMSED Research, says, \”At the moment, we don’t know very much about what it’s like for former refugees to live in New Zealand over a long time. It is important for us to find out what helps people from refugee backgrounds settle well in the long term. We are keen to hear about their experiences of finding work, going to school or training courses, and learning English\”.

Interviewers from diverse backgrounds, and who speak various languages, are already in communities talking with former refugees. Some are former refugees themselves, giving them a personal understanding of what it is like to settle in New Zealand.
