  • NZPPA FREE Members Only SPECIAL WEBINAR: NEW TO THE CRIMES ACT – THEFT BY EMPLOYER (IMPACT ON PAYROLL PRACTITIONERS), 27 March 2025, 11 am to 11.40 am

On 14 March 2025, the Crimes (Theft by Employer) Amendment Act 2025 became part of the Crimes Act 1961 (Section 220AA, Theft by Employer).

Withholding an employee’s pay without a reasonable excuse can make the employer (and potentially a payroll practitioner) criminally liable. If this is found to have happened, individuals could face up to one year in prison and/or a $5,000 fine. All other employers could face a fine of up to $30,000.

In this special webinar, we will discuss this new amendment to the Crimes Act 1961 and provide examples of what payroll needs to do to ensure employees’ wages are not unlawfully withheld. We will also cover how payroll practitioners can ensure any advice to hold employee wages is based on sound legislative requirements.

This webinar will be recorded, and once published, a copy will be sent to all attendees who have booked, along with the presentation notes (PDF).

NZPPA Special Webinar: Extra Pay (Lump Sum) Essentials – 10 April 2025 (9 am to 11.30 am)

Extra pay, commonly known as lump sum payments (also referred to as extra emoluments), is a payment that is not regularly included in salary or wages for a pay period. Extra pay uses an annualised calculation to determine the tax rate. As of 1 April 2025, a new approach will apply to extra pay as part of termination pay.

In this online seminar, both the current and new approaches (for termination and extra pay) will be fully covered, with explanations for each type of extra pay, the reasons for it, and fully worked examples demonstrating the different approaches.

All NZPPA webinars are recorded, and attendees will receive a link to the recorded session. Comprehensive PDF course notes will be provided during and after the webinar, along with access to the NZPPA support email. You are encouraged to ask questions.

  • PAYROLL RECORDS ESSENTIALS

Payroll record keeping is an essential payroll activity. This is because of the legislative requirements for various records that payroll produces, which must be recorded and retained for different periods and held in different formats. If not managed correctly (with compliance as a focus), it can cause a significant risk to the business with substantial fines and opens the door for further action to be taken against the employer by an employee, their representative or external parties.

This special webinar will cover all payroll record-keeping and privacy requirements to give payroll practitioners a clear understanding of what they need to do to ensure correct record-keeping in payroll.

  • SPECIAL WEBINAR – MAKING AGREED TERMS WORK FOR PAYROLL

A large part of what we do in payroll is in interpreting, configuring, and applying agreed terms that the business has decided to provide to an employee (either through their employment agreement, policy, or even one-off special situations).

A lot of these extra agreed terms cause issues for payroll because they have not been developed in conjunction with what payroll can do (what the payroll system can do or not, legislative requirements how the payment fits with payroll processing, how complicated the agreed term has been made that takes additional payroll resources to process).

Attendees will get a comprehensive set of webinar notes (PDF emailed before the webinar) and will be encouraged to ask questions throughout the webinar. Attendees will also get a link to the recorded webinar after the session.
